Category Spotlight: Broadband Connectivity

Internet access is more important than ever for Ontarians. Across the province, hybrid and remote work means the demand for reliable broadband connectivity is growing. In cities and rural downtowns, businesses are connecting with customers online, and municipalities are finding innovative ways to deliver services to residents via the internet.

Since 2005, $7.9 million has been invested into 13 broadband projects within the province through the Canada Community-Building Fund. Through this category, municipalities may invest in broadband projects that result in the construction, material enhancement or renewal of infrastructure that provides internet access to residents, businesses, and/or institutions.

Project example:

The Regional Municipality of York invested CCBF funding under the broadband category into improving the delivery of broadband connectivity for 17 regional facilities and three municipal facilities within the Cities of Vaughan and Markham. This project continues to grow the region’s fibre network and improve service delivery. This project is expected to be completed by 2023.
