Community Centre a Foundation of Strength in North Frontenac

Community centres are often the heart of rural villages and towns across Ontario.

The Snow Road Community Centre in North Frontenac is no exception. Not only is it a community hub, but it’s also an important part of community history.

In 2021, the municipality used investments from the Canada Community-Building Fund to make improvements to the building’s foundation, so the community could continue to enjoy events at the centre for years to come.

The project involved rehabilitation of the foundation, which was original to the building, and constructed from field stone and rubble masonry. The mortar was significantly deteriorated, allowing some of the field stone to come loose.

A two-inch thick layer of “shotcrete” (a form of concrete that’s applied as a liquid and hardens in place) was applied to places where the original foundation was exposed on the interior of the building. This helped bond the stone and improve the overall strength.

With the work complete, Snow Road Community centre is ready for use, and will remain a North Frontenac landmark for the foreseeable future.
