Cornwall Makes Room for Growth with Waste System Efficiency Upgrades

Ontario’s population is growing rapidly, and cities like Cornwall are making important investments to increase efficiency and capacity of municipal services to address this growth.

Cornwall invested $400,000 from the CCBF to relocate, expand, and upgrade its Landfill Gas Collection System. The project enables the capture of harmful greenhouse gases like methane that are produced when waste decomposes at the landfill. These gases are burned off in a controlled environment, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere.

Most notably for residents, the smell from the landfill has been significantly reduced in surrounding areas.

Work involved the construction and implementation of additional extraction wells, among other upgrades to the main gas collection facility.

This innovative project is part of a larger effort by the City to increase efficiency of waste systems in order to accommodate a growing population. In combination with other initiatives like organic waste collection and a clear bag policy, it has reduced the load on the landfill system which significantly extends its useful life.
