Earth Day Spotlight – Climate Resilient Infrastructure

As our climate becomes more and more unpredictable, it’s essential that local governments are prepared.

“Resilience” is one of 18 investment categories under the Community stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF-CS).

Eligible resilience projects are those that enhance or renew natural infrastructure to strengthen communities in the face of climate change, natural disasters, and extreme weather events.

Investments from food safety infrastructure (community gardens, greenhouses) to wildfire prevention measures can be funded by the BCSF-CS and help create a better future for Ontario’s municipalities.

Notable resilience projects from 2025 include:

  • Erosion mitigation for Munn’s Creek in Oakville – using armour stone and vegetation to protect approximately 40 homes
  • Peche Island preservation in Windsor – creating 12 rock berms off the coastline that will protect the shoreline from further erosion
  • Shoreline Protection Measures in the Town of Lincoln - reducing long-term impacts from flooding and erosion on roadways due to rising water levels
