Growth Essentials #1 - Water
Water systems are the unseen heroes of municipal infrastructure.
Though out of sight and out of mind, residents and businesses rely on municipal water every day. From residential showers and toilets to commercial dishwashers and public pools, water infrastructure is essential.
More than 60,000 km of pipe – the same distance as 18 flights from Toronto to Vancouver – carries nearly 1.6 trillion litres of potable water from treatment plants to communities across Ontario each year. For communities to grow, there must be plans for expansion of delivery.
The CCBF is funding new and expanded systems across Ontario including:
- In Whitchurch-Stouffville, the CCBF helped invest in a $3.5 million project to improve water and wastewater infrastructure on Edward Street. The reconstruction work will allow for greater housing densities and new development in the area.
- Fauquier-Strickland constructed a new water treatment facility to increase capacity and modernize services. The CCBF contributed to the $2 million investment.
- Halton Region invested $3.7 million with the help of the CCBF to increase the capacity of Bridgeview Wastewater Pumping Station and extend an existing watermain.
Many other municipalities are also investing to increase capacity of pipes and treatment plants using the CCBF so they can support long-term planning, future growth, and new development.
More than 35,500m of watermains and sewers were constructed using the CCBF in the last 10 years.
