Markham Community Centre Moves Toward Net Zero
The City of Markham is improving energy efficiency at the Centennial Community Centre through a major project that replaces the heating and cooling system.
Welcoming approximately one million visitors each year, the 142,000-square-foot facility is a valuable recreation hub for the community. Since its construction in 1972 it has grown to include a pool, sports courts, a fitness centre, community rooms, and more, with additional amenities outdoors.
Markham receives more than $11 million annually from the BCSF Community stream, and uses that funding for dozens of projects each year. For this community centre project, the City replaced six HVAC units in the facility with more energy-efficient, lower emission alternatives.
The initiative supports the City’s goals of reducing energy consumption and cutting emissions while maintaining comfort for facility users. The new systems help ensure the community centre can continue to serve residents sustainably for years to come.
