Offsetting Auto-Dependency in Peel
Peel Region is growing at a rate that puts significant pressure on its transportation network. Planning for the future requires a balanced and efficient approach to infrastructure investments that aims to ease traffic flow and reduce commute times.
The Region’s Long Range Transportation Plan aims to increase the share of sustainable transportation trips from 37% to 50% by the year 2041. Sustainable transportation includes walking, cycling, public transit, and carpooling.
In 2025, the Canada Community-Building Fund supported many active transportation projects in the Region representing a more than $6 million CCBF investment.
One of eight active projects is located on Dixie Road between Steeles Avenue and Advance Boulevard, involving construction of 590 metres of multi-use pathway which bridges a key gap in the active transportation network.
These projects create and upgrade walking and cycling infrastructure, encourage more efficient commutes, and promote healthy and livable communities.
