Pedestrian Tunnel Making Travel Safer in Cambridge

Investing in safe and accessible pedestrian infrastructure is a priority of the Build Communities Strong Fund’s Community stream (BCSF-CS).

Soper Park Tunnel in Cambridge is a critical link in the City’s active transportation network, bridging a gap across a busy arterial road (Dundas Street).

Using part of its yearly $4.5 million from the BCSF-CS, Cambridge invested in upgrades to the tunnel that support the smooth flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, increase the longevity of the structure, and create a safer environment for residents.

Work involved repointing the tunnel, reinforcing the roadbed, and replacing deteriorated concrete. The tunnel was originally built approximately 189 years ago and this investment will support residents of all ages and abilities for many years to come.
