Sarnia Waterfront Rehabilitation Improves Shoreline Protection and Safety for Residents

In 2020, the City of Sarnia experienced record high water levels along the shores of Lake Huron, resulting in severe erosion to its shoreline infrastructure.

Damage to this key infrastructure meant sections of Sarnia’s walking trails were temporarily closed, and roadways along some of the five-kilometre area of shoreline were at risk.

Thanks to contributions from the Canada Community-Building Fund, the City of Sarnia was able to rehabilitate 600 metres of eroded shoreline, replacing steel groynes, retaining walls, beach access points, and performing general maintenance in the area.

This disaster mitigation work has resulted in Sarnia’s much-loved walking trails reopening to the public. It means safe access to roadways and beaches for residents and tourists alike.

Completion of this project signifies a long-term solution for shoreline protection and is a great example of how the Canada Community-Building Fund assists with implementation of priority projects.
