Shoreline Restoration on Windsor’s Peche Island

The City of Windsor completed shoreline restoration and erosion protection works at Peche Island, thanks to an investment of more than $2.4 million from the Government of Canada through the Build Communities Strong Fund – Community stream.

The island has experienced shoreline erosion due to heavy waves from large ships and strong currents on the Detroit River. Restoration works have stabilized the island’s shoreline and regained some of the land lost to erosion.

The project involved construction of 600 metres of rock retaining wall along the shoreline, and construction of nine new sheltering islands and 12 rock berms off the north shore.

The sheltering islands create a calm water bay, providing a suitable environment for local aquatic life. The fish habitat has been successfully restored with dense vegetation behind the berms and an increase in biodiversity.
