Wastewater Investment Supports Significant Housing Growth in Niagara Falls

Niagara Region is rehabilitating a sanitary sewer on Thundering Waters Boulevard in Niagara Falls, helping enable more than 2,700 new homes. 

$5 million in federal funding through the BCSF Community Stream is supporting the $11 million project.

The “trunk” sewer is a cornerstone of the local wastewater system and is relied on by more than 14,000 residents. This project increases the number of residents served by more than 20%. 

Originally installed in 1973, a recent assessment showed that it had significant corrosion and required replacement. The project will not only help ensure the sewer continues to provide reliable service but expands its capacity to serve new residential development.

It ensures there will be reliable long-term wastewater capacity and removes a key infrastructure bottleneck to enable housing growth across the community.
