Wildlife Tunnel a Unique Solution for Aurora

Humans are not the only species that use Ontario’s wide ranging road network.

The Town of Aurora completed work on a new culvert that serves as a “wildlife passage” in an area identified as a “hotspot” for wildlife. It features a “low flow” channel for fish and turtles as well as space for other animals to cross safely under the road.

The new culvert will create safer conditions for both human drivers and the local ecosystem near Henderson Drive, replacing an aging and undersized culvert. New retaining walls and other structural supports were also installed, which will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion in the future.

Other features were added to maintain a safe and healthy wildlife habitat including fences to direct animals away from the roadway, additional local tree and vegetation planting, and basking logs for turtles.

Local volunteers have already noticed a decline in wildlife incidents since the project was completed, and the project received a Healthy Water Award from the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA).

Smoother travel for all parties is possible thanks to this CCBF investment.
